Non-Domestic Renewable heat incentive (RHI)

Renewable heat incentive (RHI)The non-Domestic RHI is a Government scheme designed to encourage businesses to install renewable energy heating systems in place of fossil fuel systems (gas, oil, coal, LPG). For the purpose of this scheme, an installation that supplies more than one home (such as a block of flats) counts as non-domestic.

What is eligible?

Technologies eligible for the non-domestic RHI include Heat pumps, biomass boilers, solar thermal water heating, biomethane injection, biogas, Combined Heat & Power (CHP) & deep geothermalEligible technologies are:

  • Heat pumps (air-, ground-, or water-source)
  • Biomass boilers
  • Solar thermal water heating
  • Biomethane injection
  • Biogas
  • Combined Heat & Power (CHP)
  • Deep Geothermal

How does it work?

The appropriate technology is installed by an MCS accredited installer. Payments are then made based upon the amount of eligible renewable energy generated. This is measured using an accredited heat meter.

Because there are more potential systems and uses of the thermal energy, the application process is more complex (see the Ofgem guide for more information).

Every non-domestic installation requires heat metering, but for a small business unit or office block the system can be relatively straight forward to install.
