Home Owner Cuts Oil Heating Costs By 75% With Heat Pumps

01 May 2014Air Source Heat Pump

Mr & Mrs P purchased a period 1830’s Georgian property in late 2007 and inherited an oil consumption of around 10,000 litres per year. Cost at today’s oil prices over £7,000 per year.
Having researched the market in detail the customer concluded that a Renewable Heating system was the only viable option to reduce costs and improve CO2 emissions.

The Solution

Large house off mains gasAfter assessing the Renewable Heating options with Bright Green Renewables it was agreed that a heat pump was the most cost effective method for providing space heating and hot water.

A Ground Source Heat Pump was discounted as the gardens had recently been landscaped and the customer didn’t want to excavate these in order to install the ground collector loop. An Air Source Heat Pump provided an ideal solution. A high temperature unit was selected to ensure that the existing period radiators would work effectively with the new system.

The Installation

The completed heat pump systemThe heat pump was mounted in a corner of the property and screened by ornamental trellising. A trench was excavated on the front drive and pre-insulated pipework was buried to allow the hot water to enter the cellar.

From the cellar the heated water was routed into a Buffer Tank and a new 300L Hot Water Cylinder. The use of a Buffer Vessel allowed the existing oil system to be automatically activated should any additional heat capacity be required.

The system was configured to run fully automatically via a conventional programmable room thermostat and as well as heating the radiators, provides a full tank of hot water 24 hours per day.

The Benefits

The first winterThe costs for providing all central heating and hot water are now around £1,500 per year for a family of four including two teenage children. For a property of around 450m2 this is extremely low.

The system has performed faultlessly since being commissioned by Bright Green Renewable’s technicians and requires minimal maintenance or servicing. A very happy customer ...
