Old Farmhouse Greatly Reduce Electric Bills Using Solar Panels

04 July 2012Solar Photovoltaic

Mr G is a retired farmer and lives in an old farm house. Bright Green Renewables installed an Air Source Heat Pump into his property in 2011 and he has benefitted from a significant reduction in his heating and hot water bills following the change from LPG heating to a heat pump.

With a view to reducing his utility bills further Bright Green Renewables proposed the installation of a 4KW solar PV array. Rather than disturb the traditional farmhouse roof a powder-coated ground mounted system was designed and installed.

The Solution

Bright Green Renewables surveyed the property, gardens and outbuildings to ascertain the best location for the array. A ground mounted system was proposed and a steel mounting frame designed and fabricated. It enabled the array to be out of reach of his livestock whilst benefitting from an ideal South West orientation and having no shading from other buildings or trees.

A 16 panel Schueco 240 watt array and mounting system, along with a Sunnyboy SMA inverter were specified.

The Installation

The frame was delivered to site and over a 2-day period the array was mounted and commissioned by our team of trained roofers and solar PV qualified electricians (including a 100m cable run back to the farmhouse). The array now provides the majority of the electrical energy required for his heat pump, providing heating and hot water into the farmhouse at very low cost.

The Benefits

Feed-in-tariff £662
Saving on electricity bill £173
Export tariff £49
Total £884 per annum
